Movie Night

After my last post (about a highly-structured murder mystery party), I’ve decided to change gears a little bit and talk about the chillest of chill activities, the ever classic movie night. By advice here is simple: have a tiny sliver of a plan and no more.

You don’t have to have the movie(s) to watch picked out before everyone arrives, but do have a bit of a plan. When everyone sits down in front of the tv and you have netflix, amazon prime, and dvds at your disposal, you don’t want to spend the next half hour arguing over what genre before even considering specific movies (trust me, I’ve been there, and it has ruined movie nights).

Instead, have a theme or selection prepared. If you want to watch a scary movie, tell everyone is is a horror movie night beforehand. If it’s the holidays, bring gingerbread cookies. If you’re planning on watching When In Rome, serve pasta or mozzarella sticks. I’ve had some great German movie nights with a subtitled movie and gummy bears.

On the other hand, don’t stick to plan that isn’t working. One time, a friend of mine hosted a Quentin Tarantino film night and invited everyone in out high school (I went to an extremely small school, so this was not unusual). In the end, mostly freshman girls showed up. If you don’t know, Tarantino movies are the greatest. But they are also all rated R for violence, language, and just about everything else. Inglourious Basterds did give us this scene of Brad Pitt speaking Italian with a southern accent, though, which is my personal favorite scene in all of cinema.

Anyway, this movie selection did not go over well with freshman girls. In fact, the father of one came into the house to drop her off and wouldn’t even let her stay. We should have jut changed the movies we watched. So be flexible in your plan.

Nostalgia Electrics 48-Inch Vintage Collection Popcorn Cart

After the surprisingly complicated process of selecting a movie, you will need to provide snacks. Popcorn is, of course, the greatest movie snack of all time. If you invite more than a few people over, I would recommend a popcorn maker, so you don’t spend the entire night microwaving bags of popcorn. If you have one of these awesome popcorn carts, your friends will be very impressed. Most important, make sure to have enough popcorn, so you don’t run out!

And never forget the popcorn toppings. You can use the delicious seasonings, or even candy. I highly recommend Buncha Crunch or M&Ms.

Now, remember to turn off your cell phones and enjoy the show.
